CASE STUDY
South Jersey Industries Renewable Energy Initiative
South Jersey Industries (SJI) embarked on a crucial initiative to fulfill its commitment to providing cleaner energy, focusing on generating renewable natural gas at dairy farms. This endeavor required modular production facilities at each site, demanding rapid deployment across multiple locations and the development of a universal architecture for integrating control and enterprise systems. The project’s distributed nature and its critical role in energy infrastructure necessitated top-tier security and reliability. SJI’s need for central monitoring from an enterprise SCADA system, including data historization for financial and regulatory purposes, emphasized the adage “data is the new gas.”
InflexionPoint was chosen by SJI Industries to lay the groundwork for applying essential control and information technologies, aiming to achieve a world-class standard in Digital Transformation and secure data management. This allowed SJI to offer comprehensive access to control system information across the organization. InflexionPoint’s strategic application of industrial information technologies yielded significant improvements in reliability, availability, visibility, and security.
The Project Problem
The project presented by South Jersey Industries (SJI) encompassed several complex requirements. Foremost was the need for swift deployment of modular production facilities in remote, often rural, locations. Critical to these sites was the implementation of comprehensive SCADA control, ensuring full visibility and management across diverse modular equipment systems. A key aspect of the project involved the secure and reliable transmission of data from these systems to a centralized repository, essential for detailed financial and regulatory reporting. This reporting required the precise accounting of raw materials, renewable natural gas output, and waste products.
Results
InflexionPoint successfully met all of SJI’s requirements for a secure system across more than 50 sites. The solution included a standard control system at each location, centralized monitoring and data recording, fulfilling SJI’s requirements for a dependable data repository crucial for financial and regulatory reporting.
SJI Renewable Energy Ventures has initiated eight renewable natural gas projects, including locations in Michigan, New York, and Connecticut. Plans are also underway for six additional facilities across Minnesota and South Dakota. This venture, with rights for up to 40 dairy farms, aims to significantly reduce gasoline usage, with the potential to replace 25 million gallons annually, equivalent to the consumption of around 50,000 cars. This strategic partnership positions SJI to emerge as a leader in waste-to-energy projects nationally by 2025.
